3 Situations When You Want to Replace Your Shingles in Ontario

April 11, 2017

Roofs are an important component of any house but are generally overlooked in regards to maintenance. It is important to pay attention to the state of your roof shingles because what may appear to be a tiny roof problem could lead to major structural damage if not dealt with immediately.

If you are a homeowner in Ontario here are three situations where you want to replace your shingles:

Curling Shingles

Curling shingles are the most common indicators that it is time to replace them. Shingles will began to curl as a result of excessive heat and moisture and this suggests that they have reached their life expectancy. Be sure to tend to curling shingles as quickly as possible, as they no longer offer a protective shield from water, which can be detrimental to the rest of your home.

Missing/Broken Shingles

Make sure to always inspect your roof for missing shingles. Your roof should be a flat, smooth surface in order to properly allow water to drain off. If you notice broken or missing shingles, the age of your roof can help you assess the severity of the problem. If you have a relatively new roof, replacing the missing shingles will be a good temporary fix. However, if your roof is approaching its 15th birthday, a much bigger issue may be lying beneath the surface.

Granules in your Gutters

Towards the end of your roof’s life cycle, shingles will begin to lose more and more granules. If you check your gutters and are finding an excessive amount of granules piling up, it is time to replace your shingles. Granules are a vital component of your roofing system as they act as protection from the sun and improve your roof’s ability to drain water. Signs of discoloration or the presence of dark spots are another good method of checking for excessive loss of granule. In this situation the quality of your roof will decline rapidly as the absence of granules will cause your shingles to bake.
