Every homeowner faces the task of having to buy new shingles for their home. There are many different types of roofing shingles available these days, but a couple of choices tend to dominate the market as the most popular options. In this blog we would like to save you some time by offering insight into these commonly purchased types of roofing shingles. Which provides better value and the best fit for your roof?

When it comes to roofing shingles, Asphalt Shingles are the most popular choice for homeowners in Ontario. There are two different styles to choose from when building a new roof:

  • Three-Tab Shingles
  • Architectural Shingles

So what’s the difference between three-tab shingles and architectural shingles?

Three-Tab Shingles

Three-tab shingles are the standard roofing shingle. They have three sections to them and they are fairly thin and uniform in size and shape. Three-tab shingles cost less than architectural shingles, making them a common choice for many residential homes.

They come with a full 5 year warranty and 25 year limited warranty, so homeowners should be aware of the small print and understand what this limited warranty includes! After 5 years, the warranty will be prorated so you will incur some of the costs of repair or replacement yourself.

Architectural Shingles

Architectural shingles come all in one piece and have the look of cedar shake to it, making your home’s roof feel more natural. They are thicker and heavier than three-tab roofing shingles. At Ollie’s Roofing, we will install architectural shingles on most people’s roofs because the price difference is not large—although architectural shingles are more expensive!

Architectural shingles come with a full 15 year warranty and a limited lifetime warranty, with similar conditions to the three-tab shingles. The extended warranty period and improved quality of architectural shingles is usually well-worth the increased costs,

as this investment can greatly improve the value of your home in the long term.

Aside from these two main types, there are other options available—however, these are all significantly more expensive. In general, architectural shingles are the best roofing shingle and more cost effective over time. They are becoming increasingly popular today and beginning to replace three-tab shingles as the common choice for roofing.
